Today, I’ve teamed up with my friend Serein to each share our top 5 favorite clean beauty products! I’ll be talking about my clean skincare picks, and she is sharing clean makeup, so make sure to go check out her blog! Set aside some time, because you’ll also want to binge-watch her YouTube videos and get your heart-eye emojis ready for her Instagram page.
What is clean beauty?
Companies market their products as “all-natural” or “green”, but what does that even mean? Does it really mean anything?
One of my favorite quotes about this topic is from Victoria Tsai, founder of Tatcha, “There are some synthetic ingredients which cause no harm to the skin, just as there are some natural ingredients which are harmful (think of a bee sting).” Natural does not mean safe, nor does artificial mean toxic.
Really, there are a lot of different definitions when it comes to clean beauty, and to some extent, it’s personal. I can’t really say what truly is clean or not clean. There’s still so much we don’t know about how chemicals affect our skin in the long-run. I’m not a clean freak, but I do tend to avoid a few key ingredients: phthalates, sulfates, parabens, and mineral oil. I generally find my skin better off when I exclude these ingredients.
The beauty industry is highly unregulated, so when in doubt, take it upon yourself to decide which ingredients are acceptable or unacceptable for your own lifestyle with some research.
Favorite clean skincare
The following are my favorite products that I personally consider to be clean. I put a level of trust in each of these brands that they really do responsibly source their ingredients.
There is only one ingredient to this magical balm: organic Nilotica Reserve Shea Butter. With this one ingredient, I can be sure there’s nothing bad in here. I’m so obsessed with this stuff. I use it as a nighttime moisturizer to nourish and heal my skin, or just in spots that need some TLC. It’s very thick, but a little goes a long way and it doesn’t clog my pores.
Added bonus: the brand sources the nuts to make this balm in Africa, paying their workers three times the local wages. I encourage anyone to read the story about this brand because founder Leila Janah is such a kick-ass person.
It was hard to choose my favorite Farmacy product! I decided to go with the first product I tried: Honey Potion. This is still my holy grail face mask. I use it in the morning to perfect my skin to ensure I have a great skin day. I have a full review of Honey Potion with more details, but this does just about everything I could ask for.
There’s a lot to love about Farmacy. They have their own farm where they derive their ingredients, fusing nature with the science of skincare.
This is the oil that got me into facial oils. It’s so nourishing and hydrating, and I swear my skin glows the next morning when I wake up. I originally reviewed Rock & Rose awhile back, but this is still an absolute favorite of mine. They use only naturally-derived oils, no fillers.
The ladies behind Rosalena are absolutely incredible, living by their motto: “Pause, Breathe, Be.” My friend Cat wrote up a beautiful post about these ladies that is well worth a read!
Tata Harper is a brand that’s been on my radar for years, but I’ve never picked up a full size product. I hoard samples of her products, including the Resurfacing Face Mask. When I’m traveling, I always take a sample of this mask: it detoxifies, smoothes, and perfects my skin in a flash.
I definitely want to try more of her products, but this mask is something special that I intend to purchase once I finish my deluxe samples. Tata Harper is “passionate about promoting a modern, health-conscious natural beauty industry that’s committed to safety, honesty, and sustainability.” If only all companies felt this way!
This is hands down the best retinol I’ve used. My skin’s texture improves overnight with this serum. It’s hydrating and makes my skin soft and plump. You can check out my original review from last year, but I haven’t come across a retinol that is -this- effective for my skin.
Valentia uses as many naturally-based ingredients as possible, but they’re incredibly effective. I have an affiliate code with Valentia to save you 15% off your purchase on website! Use code JELLY at checkout 🙂
As I do my research, I’ve become a bit more picky about what I put on my skin. There are tons of clean skincare brands I’ve still yet to try! If you have any faves, let me know in the comments ↓
