Beautylish offers a yearly Fukubukuro, a traditional Japanese New Year mystery, or lucky, bag. It is a grab bag of items, offered at a discount. This year, the Beautylish lucky bag cost $75 plus $5 for shipping, with the promise of at least $150 worth of items. Teasers on Instgram showed some customers could be extra lucky, getting the Chikuhodo x Beautylish Sakura collection, or a Viseart palette.
My bag shipped on Tuesday, January 5, and arrived Saturday, January 9. Since I’m on the east coast and bags shipped from the west coast, there were many lucky bag reveals on Instagram before mine arrived. There appeared to be a pretty well-rounded mix of items from brands like Bioderma, Becca, It Cosmetics, Kevyn Aucoin, and even Natasha Denona. Beautylish only just started carrying Natasha Denona products, starting with the face products, but many customers received the eye palettes, not yet on the site!
I didn’t get so lucky to receive a Natasha Denona eye palette, but the overall value of my bag was quite good. Here’s my lucky bag for 2016:
Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Poured in Opal, retail $38 (link):
I enjoy Becca products, so it was nice to see the brand in the bags. Unfortunately, I have swatched this product in store before and it was too dark for my fair skin. I will trade this product to a friend.
Bioderma Sensibio H2O 100 ml, retail $6.95 (link):
I use Bioderma daily as a morning cleanser or to help remove my makeup at night. I prefer the Hydrabio for my dry skin, but the original still works for me.
Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Palette in Fallen Angel, retail $65 (link):
This was the most valuable product in my bag, and I would’ve been thrilled to get it if I didn’t already have it. In fact, I purchased it from Beautylish. I suppose they don’t check for that. It’s a beautiful quad, though severely overpriced – her quads are usually $52. I will trade this product to a friend.
It Cosmetics Hello Lashes Clinically Proven 5-in-1 Mascara, retail $24 (link):
A mascara isn’t really an exciting product, and like most mascaras, is probably overpriced. I will give it a shot, mainly because I don’t think anyone would be interested in trading for it.
Kevyn Aucoin The Pure Powder Glow in Myracle, retail $37 (link):
I was excited to get a product from Kevyn Aucoin, because I usually enjoy his products. Unfortunately, this blush is a crazy color. It looked a lot like Tom Ford Narcissist, which was horrible on me and I got rid of it. Here’s a review I found on the blush that confirmed my suspicions. I will attempt to trade this to a friend.
Sugarpill Cosmetics False Eyelashes in Firefly Individuals, retail $7 (link):
False lashes wouldn’t have been so bad if these were not bedazzled with blue sequins. I’ll be getting rid of these somehow.
Overall bag value: $177.95
This may have been a wonderful bag for someone else, but I already own the most valuable item and the other items are not suitable for me. I have many friends who I will be able to trade with, which makes me feel more lucky than any bag could. Better luck next year!
