I hate to admit it, but I never really understood bronzer until recently. Sure, I’d watch a YouTube tutorial and see the magical transformation from pre-bronzer to post-bronzer. It makes a beautiful difference for so many people. However, when it came to myself, I just couldn’t figure out how to make it work.
I used the well-known tip to make a “3” on the side of my face, and I’d be left with an orange mess with any bronzer I tried. I thought to myself, “I’m just too ghostly to use bronzer.” Well, I am certainly on the pale side; however, the issue wasn’t the lightness of my skin, but the undertone. I have quite cool-toned skin, which contrasts heavily against the typical warm bronzer.

A couple of years ago, my friend gifted me the Tom Ford Bronzing Powder in Terra. As I didn’t understand bronzers so well, I tried to use it as a contour powder. It was not cool-toned enough for that purpose, and it did not look natural in the way that I applied it. Recently, I pulled the powder back out and tried it with a “3” bronzing application. Angels began to sing.
No doubt, Terra is a warm shade, but the undertones are reddish, as opposed to orange. The red pairs beautifully with the pink in my skin to give me the appearance of natural, sun-kissed skin. Not only does Terra add a bit of color (and, therefore, life) to my face, it creates a bit of depth and dimension.
Many people get quite angry when someone says they are “contouring” with a bronzer, but I do believe there is a lower level of contouring that bronzing can provide. The lighter parts of skin come forward, while the areas bronzed in a darker shade recess. A gray powder certainly looks like shadows on the face, but there are times when a contour powder can look quite severe, especially in real life.
Back to the new love of my life: Terra. Though my bronzer collection isn’t very large, I have included some comparison swatches to show how Terra is so set apart from my other bronzers.

As you can see, bronzers generally look especially warm and unnatural on my cool skin. Terra pairs with my skin easily.
I am happy to announce that I now understand the magic of bronzing, thanks to Tom Ford’s bronzer in Terra. It is such a flawless powder, as you’d expect from Tom Ford, but the shade is what really sets it apart for me. It is true love.
