MAC Grand Illusion Liquid Lipcolour ReviewI’ve been super into lip gloss lately, but I’ve honestly been boring myself with my color choices. Today, MAC launched a glossy liquid lip that is exciting and attention-grabbing: the Grand Illusion Liquid Lipcolour*.

The MAC Grand Illusion Liquid Lipcolour is a “holographic lip colour packed with iridescent pearls and megawatt colour.” They have a futuristic vibe – the colors are packed with shine and complex iridescence.

Shades + Swatches

MAC sent me 7 of the 14 shades. A lot of the colors are quite bold, while some are more on the wearable side.

Broken Halo – Silver with multi-colour iridescence

Fluorescence – Electric yellow with pink iridescence

Pearly Girl – Cool pink with red and gold iridescence

Pink Trip – Bright pink with blue iridescence

Sensory Overload – Blackened deep purple with shimmering iridescence

Space Bubble – Blackberry Red with red iridescence

Twinkle Twink – Coral with gold pearl

Swatches below are on my arm in direct sunlight. It was hard to capture the complexity of each of the shades; they all have really beautiful shimmer!

MAC Grand Illusion Liquid Lipcolour Review, Swatches

MAC Grand Illusion Liquid Lipcolour Swatches L-R: Broken Halo, Fluorescence, Pearly Girl, Pink Trip, Sensory Overload, Space Bubble, Twinkle Twink

Of the shades I have, I’ll probably reach for Pink Trip, and occasionally Space Bubble and Pearly Girl. Broken Halo and Fluorescence will make for nice lip toppers but they’re not terrific on their own. I like Twinkle Twink, but it doesn’t suit me personally. Sensory Overload is really beautiful too though; if I’m in a vampy mood, I’ll reach for this one.

A note on the formula: these are lip glosses with a medium amount of pigment and tons of shine/shimmer.

Some of the shades are more opaque than others on lips. It depends on the look you’re going for if that’s a problem or not. If you really want to avoid your natural lip color peeking through underneath, I’d lay down a lip pencil first. MAC lists suggestions for matching lip pencils on their site.

They’re supposed to be plumping, so they do have a minty scent and a cooling sensation. I had no issues with them tingling or anything in this case – it’s not as extreme as Buxom’s lip creams, for example. The cooling dissipates after 15 minutes or so.

Overall, I find these very comfortable to wear. I’m easily able to smack my lips together. They last decently well (a few hours), though there is going to be transfer.MAC Grand Illusion Liquid Lipcolour Review

These Grand Illusion Liquid Lipcolours are super fun! I love the futuristic vibe.

These are not really going to be my go-to lip glosses since I tend toward wearable shades. If you’re feeling bold, I’d recommend Sensory Overload because it’s so unique. If bold isn’t your thing, Pink Trip, Pearly Girl, and Space Bubble are great choices.
