I slowed my roll when it came to makeup in 2017. I didn’t wear it everyday, and often went for minimal looks when I did apply makeup. I was just so much more focused on skincare – you can see my skincare favorites for the year here.
Today I’m sharing the makeup I most enjoyed this past year.
Since skincare was a big focus for me this past year, I went for lots of dual-action products that could act as makeup and skincare. The J. One Jelly Pack is my favorite primer because it is both. It is kind of weird to use, but it’s hydrating and locks my makeup down all day.
A surprise favorite for me was the Becca First Light Primer*. I received this via Influenster and hated it at first because I didn’t think it was doing anything. The effect is subtle, but it really does give skin a little bit of radiance. It’s also hydrating, which my dry skin always needs. This is a great everyday primer, when I’m not worried about my makeup lasting forever.
One of my goals for the year was to finish my Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick (I wear shade 0). I ended up happily using this stick foundation a ton this year, and now I’m sad that I finished it! It’s so easy to use and looks natural. On my many lazy days, I turned to this to even out my skin tone with just a bit of coverage. I’ll end up repurchasing this once I finish a few other foundations in my collection.
After I finished the Bobbi Brown stick, I went back to my Guerlain Baby Glow in shade Light. This has a peachy tint that brightens my skin with light coverage. I love how naturally radiant it makes my skin look.
For more coverage, I instantly fell in love with MAC Studio Fix Fluid* (I’m shade NW10). It’s long-lasting with medium-full (buildable) coverage. I love the natural finish (go figure). I wish the bottle had a pump though!
Tarte Shape Tape was my favorite for a big part of the year because it has such amazing coverage without creasing. I started to realize it wasn’t really compatible with all of my foundations though. It would lift up the foundation underneath when I applied it in some cases. I still love it, but I have to be careful.
Since I’m so lazy, I have been turning back to the Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer (shade Fair-Neutral). It works every time, though it doesn’t have as much coverage as the Tarte. It’s a really great everyday concealer.
I think I finally found my holy grail setting powder – Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder*. I received this from Influenster with no expectations, and found it to be the most finely milled, perfect powder. I never notice cakiness with this. It’s beautiful under my eyes or all over.
I also love to use a finishing powder. Guerlain Meteorites can be kind of polarizing – some people think they do nothing, while others think they are everything. I think those little balls are magic for sure. On lazy days, I just use Meteorites sometimes. They just add a boost of radiance and evenness to my skin. They pull the whole look together.
With more minimal makeup looks, I stuck to natural-looking flushes on my cheeks. Honestly, I really love Milani Luminoso. I typically don’t fall for drugstore products (or even try them), but it’s well worth the hype. It’s a beautiful, healthy-looking blush.
I just love the Marc Jacobs Air Blush in Flesh & Fantasy. It has a satin nude side + a luminous highlight side that combine to make the perfect nude blush.
The LXMI Nilotica Goddess Glow* is my favorite cream cheek product. It’s a rose-gold highlighter that I use as a luminous blush for my fair skin. I mentioned this in my November favorites for 2017. And, just a reminder, you can save 30% off your order from LXMI with non-affiliate code DIORANDJELLYBEANS!
Tom Ford Terra. I think that’s all I need to say. It’s perfect for my cool, fair skin because it has reddish tones, as opposed to being overly orange.
I did purchase the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Bronzer in Nude Bronze Light, which I reached for a lot at the end of the year. It’s not too orange either, and is perfect for fair skin.
I actually didn’t buy too many new highlighters in 2017. Are you proud of me?
I really enjoyed ColourPop Lunch Money, which I was working on finishing this past year. I hit major pan on it! I really liked how natural it could be, or visible from space, if I wanted it that way.
I couldn’t resist the hype of the Marc Jacobs Dew Drops. They really are metallic and gorgeous. More often, I ended up mixing this liquid highlighter with a foundation for a radiant finish.
My favorite powder highlighter was the Dior Nude Air Luminizer in Glowing Pink, but it was limited edition. In general, the Nude Air Luminizer formula is amazing and I highly recommend it if anyone is looking to splurge on a highlighter.
With my minimal makeup obsession, I cut out eyeshadow pretty fast. I stuck to lots of cream products, like the By Terry Ombre Blackstar in Misty Rocky. Ughhhh that’s gorgeous. Another favorite would be allll the Dior Fusion Monos (which might be discontinued?!?!). Get your hands on the shades Fahrenheit and/or Meteore if you can.
My favorite single shadow of the year – an easy choice – was ColourPop Snake Eyes. This color is stunning. It’s the perfect lid shade.
For palettes, I wasn’t really wowed by anything new. I gave Urban Decay Naked Heat a favorable review, and I really loved using it in the fall. It’s more geared toward warm skin tones, but I was very impressed by such wearable warm shades that worked surprisingly well for me. Plus, I think it was Urban Decay’s best shadow formulation yet.
I just can’t stop with old favorites, like ABH Modern Renaissance, Lorac Pro 3, Tartelette In Bloom, and KVD Shade + Light. I love the buttery, pigmented ABH formula for easy looks. Lorac Pro 3 and In Bloom are one-stop palettes for a neutral, everyday look. The KVD Shade + Light eye palette has my favorite, no-fail mattes. Perfect base for me to plop Snake Eyes on top.
2017 wasn’t the best year for mascara for me. I tried as many mascaras as I could get my hands on, but I didn’t discover any new favorites!
I always just go back to my old favorites here: Diorshow Blackout and Diorshow Iconic Overcurl. Blackout is super black and volumizes the heck out of my lashes, while Overcurl lengthens and curls my lashes.
This past year, I finally discovered the wonder and amazement of the Glossier Boy Brow. I use shade Brown, and I’m in love. It’s such a great brow gel to add a bit of definition, while locking everything in place. I did my sister’s makeup in May for my niece’s baptism, and got her hooked too!
I was working on finishing my ABH Brow Definer (in Medium Brown) in 2017. I had to force myself to use it at first, but ended up falling for it. It has a wide tip, so it fills in brows very quickly. Turning to the side, it’s more narrow for precision.
When I wanted very full brows, I used ABH Dipbrow (in Dark Brown). I don’t want monster brows much, but Dipbrow is truly amazing.
I just love lip products. There’s something about a pretty lipstick that makes me feel so much better.
As for new lipsticks, I’m obsessed with Very Victoria, a matte from Charlotte Tilbury. Her matte formula is amazing – creamy, pigmented, and actually comfortable to wear. I mentioned this in my November faves.
I was really impressed with the Bite Amuse Bouche Liquid Lipsticks*! Again, I’m all about comfort. These do not dry down all the way to a matte finish, but they feel amazing on my lips and wear quite well. I received 3 shades from Influenster and reviewed them on the blog, but I just picked up another.
I wore lots of lip gloss this year, but my favorites are still the Dior Addict Ultra Glosses. They have the most beautiful wet look on lips, without much stickiness. I particularly love the berry shade Diorosphere.
I probably should have included it in my skincare post instead, but I’m obsessed with the Dior Lip Sugar Scrub. It smooths lips without any residue. This is the best to prep my lips for liquid lipsticks. Read more on my blog review.
