I was more focused on skincare in 2017, keeping makeup quick and easy. I have a ton of products that I’ve fallen for this year! I’ll be sharing my makeup favorites for the year as well, but today I’ll share the best skincare for my dry skin.
Cleansers and Makeup Removers
It can be hard to find cleansers that don’t strip my dry skin! This year, I found a lot that work for me, many of which I highlighted in my post about the best cleansers for dry skin.
I use a double-cleanse system at night, especially when I’m wearing makeup. I love Farmacy Green Clean* to gently remove makeup while keeping my skin nourished. It’s a solid balm that melts into skin and it’s soooo amazing. I like to follow with a gentle cleanser, like Pur-lisse Gentle Cleansing Milk*. It removes last bits of makeup and makes my skin feel totally clean without residue or drying out my skin.
For the AM, I still love Bioderma Hydrabio. I just wipe away bits of dirt from overnight with a soaked cotton pad. Alternatively, I’ll use the Pur-lisse cleanser or the Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser. MJC is very nice, but I can only use it from late spring to early fall, or else it is a bit too drying for me. I like how soft and clean it makes my skin feel.
Toners and Mists
I’m not too adventurous with toners because I always found them too harsh. My previous holy grail toner was the Dior Gentle Toning Lotion – I really love it, despite not reaching for it a ton this year. Still, it’s so gentle and balancing without stripping skin.
I shifted to using the Pixi Glow Tonic a lot this year. It has glycolic acid to gently exfoliate and brighten my skin. I feel like I can’t live without it now!
The Origins Three Part Harmony Tri-Phase Essence Lotion pretty much does it all – it hydrates, repairs, and brightens. It’s perfect for dry skin!
I can’t stop, won’t stop when it comes to mists. My favorite mist right now is the Superoxide Dismutase Saccharide Mist from NIOD. It has antioxidants and is very moisturizing, plus feels amazing. The only con is that the sprayer isn’t as high-quality as other mists.
Of course, one of my other favorites is the Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist. The luxurious mist hydrates my skin without making it look wet.
I have a ton of favorite serums for this year, but many complete different tasks for my skin.
First, I’m still a huge fan of the combo of NIOD Copper Amino Isolate Serum (CAIS) and Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex (MMHC). Copper peptides in CAIS help address many signs of aging for better overall skin, while MMHC has many different types of hyaluronic compounds to keep skin hydrated and plump. These two keep my skin looking young and resilient.
For texture issues, I turn to Sunday Riley Good Genes. The lactic acid exfoliates my skin to make my skin smoother and brighter. I like to preface Good Genes with a retinol, like Sunday Riley Luna. Retinol does a lot of good for my skin, like reducing breakouts and keeping my skin tone even. My other favorite retinols are Valentia Night Revive Retinol Serum* and Indeed Labs Retinol Reface*. These two are hydrating and give my skin even better results than Luna. Valentia recently went through a complete makeover, and the retinol is now discontinued 🙁
I’ve been all about antioxidants this year, so naturally, I fell in love with Kypris Antioxidant Dew. I especially love to pair this with the 1,000 Roses Beauty Elixir*. This powerhouse duo makes my skin bright, soft, hydrated, and dewy.
I have horrible genetic dark circles and have always struggled to find an eye cream that could minimize their appearance. I realized I had something that was working when I would routinely forget to apply concealer under my eyes. The eye cream that decreased my dark circles enough for me to forgo concealer was the BeautyRx Gentle Exfoliating Eye Cream*. It has glycolic acid, which made me nervous to put around my eyes, but it really is gentle. It keeps my eyes hydrated without being too rich. Definitely a favorite!
Farmacy Dew It All* is a close second to the BeautyRx eye cream for decreasing dark circles. Eye Dew is more refreshing and feels a bit more hydrating. Both are staples now!
I am actually quite picky when it comes to lip care. For a long while, all I could use was the expensive Tatcha Gold Camellia Nourishing Lip Balm. It is super hydrating without feeling like a heavy layer on my lips. I apply this at night and wake up with soft, still hydrated lips.
A new favorite for this year was the Glossier Balm Dot Com. This feels a bit thicker than the Tatcha, but provides a nice protective layer. I like the price tag much more too!
Moisturizers and Oils
I have struggled to find moisturizers that are hydrating enough for my dry skin, but not too much that they cause me to break out.
My holy grail PM moisturizer is the LXMI Pure Nilotica Melt*. I’m so obsessed with this! It is only one ingredient, but boy, is it a good one. Nilotica is basically a type of shea butter. It’s very rich, so I warm it up between my fingers before applying. It feels like a protective layer on my skin, giving me soft, moisturized skin in the morning.
For the AM, I’m loving LXMI Creme du Nil. This moisturizer also contains Nilotica, but with other ingredients to make it more lightweight. It’s still hydrating and softening – the perfect companion to the Melt. Another plus: it blurs pores without silicones.
♥Just a note: you can save 30% on your order from LXMI with non-affiliate code DIORANDJELLYBEANS!
I also love the Pur-lisse Balancing Moisturizer* for the morning. It smells faintly like coconut (mmmmm), but I really love it because it is a fantastic, lightweight moisturizer. It protects my skin and keeps it hydrated all day.
When my skin is seriously irritated, I use REN Global Protection Day Cream*. It’s super soothing and hydrating, plus diminishes my redness!
Another nighttime favorite of mine is Farmacy Sleep Tight*. It makes my skin kind of greasy, but I wake up with soft, hydrated skin. It creates a nice barrier for my dry skin.
I started really getting into oils at the end of 2016. Then I was all about that oil life in 2017.
The oil that got me into oils was the Rosalena Rock & Rose oil. I wrote a post about this oil way back when, but I still love this oil as a nighttime moisturizer, especially in winter. It leaves my skin quite oily, but it’s reparative and brightening.
Another oil favorite is the Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Oil. It’s expensive, so I’ve been hoarding deluxe samples. It’s lightweight, but still moisturizing. I like to use this before my LXMI Pure Nilotica Melt when I’m super dry to lock in alllll my moisture.
Masks and Treatments
I love me a good mask! Not much makes me happier than taking time out for a little extra TLC.
My favorite mask has been Farmacy Honey Potion* for a long while. It’s not so hydrating to me outright, but it helps my skin drink in my moisturizers. I love to use this mask before a big event because it preps my skin to be the perfect canvas for makeup.
I finally tried Drunk Elephant TLC Sukari Babyfacial this year, and it totally lived up to the hype! I don’t notice too much tingling while I use it, but after, my skin is SO soft. Like a cute little baby. I am using this every other week because it’s quite expensive, plus I don’t like to go too overboard on strong AHAs.
For a quick shot of brightness for my skin, I use the REN Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask*. My skin looks so healthy and radiant after I use this.
I still use Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel Pads when my skin is acting up. Overnight, my skin is less irritated and more smooth, plus any breakouts are diminished.
I surprised myself by falling for the Pixi Peel & Polish*. It has exfoliating beads, so I have to be careful not to scrub with it as I remove it. My skin ends up baby soft in only 2 minutes with this guy, so it’s my favorite for a quick skin perfector.
Of course, the most important category: SPF!
*The* sunscreen for 2017 for me was Glossier Invisible Shield SPF 35. I wrote a rave blog review about it in the summer. I love how lightweight it is – completely invisible on my skin. It is a chemical sunscreen, but hasn’t given me any issues.
At the end of the year, I was able to try the new Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40*. Um, wow! It protects against blue light, in addition to sun protection. I love that this chemical sunscreen smooths my skin, making it the perfect base underneath makeup. Plus – it’s totally invisible.
For physical sunscreen, I use Farmacy Green Screen SPF 30*. It blends in with a minimal white cast and is lightly hydrating without being greasy. A new favorite for the summer is Luzern Labs Urban Protect Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30*. It’s mattifying, preventing my skin from getting shiny in the summer heat. It goes on with minimal effort before seamlessly blending in.
When I’m looking for all-in-one moisture and SPF, I use the Dermalogica Skin Recovery SPF 50*. It blends it pretty well and keeps my dry skin hydrated during the spring and fall. It’s not quite hydrating enough in the winter, and it leaves my skin a tad greasy in the summer.
For reapplication through the day, I use Supergoop Defense Refresh Setting Mist SPF 50 and/or the Supergoop 100% Mineral Invincible Setting Powder SPF 45*. The mist is light and refreshing, though the scent is a tad sunscreen-y. I just hold my breath and I’m good to go. The powder is incredibly convenient to use because the brush is built it. It helps control oil too – perfect for summer!
