MAC is adding 2 new highlighting palettes to the permanent line: the Hyper Real Glow Face Palettes*. I was super excited to receive these from MAC to test, and wanted to share my review before they launch this Thursday, January 15!
Hyper Real Glow
What it is: Finally, something worthy of the hype. Fall fast and hard for the highlighting perfection of Hyper Real Glow. Each palette packs three shades of irresistibly creamy highlighting powder to create flawlessly smooth, supercharged radiance. Give into gleam beyond your dreams. Get lost in the Hyper Real.
The packaging is sturdy, but lightweight, with a magnetic closure. The shade names are not listed on the palette (sad face), but the powders do take up a ton of room. There is a mirror as well.
Shades + Swatches
There are 2 palettes, each with 3 shades.
Get it Glowin’ (gold shades):
Gold Coasting – fleshy peach with fine gold shimmer
Get it Glowin’ – champagne gold with gold shimmer
Rosy Cheer- rich golden bronze with fine gold shimmer
Flash + Awe (pink shades):
Flash + Awe – palest silvery shimmery pink
Rosy Glow – medium toned shimmer shell pink
Light of the Party – flesh toned shimmery peachy pink
With my fair skin, Flash + Awe works much better for me. I’m surprised that Get it Glowin’ can work as well, but I think it will be better in the summer, once I’ve seen the sun.
The Hyper Real Glow powders are super soft and creamy. They pick up well on a brush or fingers without crumbling or fallout for easy application.
The powders are pigmented, but have a smooth look on skin. For the amount of shine, I expected these to look a little more stripey with the level of intensity – but they don’t (unless I pack on a ton). They can blend out easily for a natural look too!
I am also impressed by the length of wear I can get out of these. With the light shades from Flash + Awe, I still have a poppin’ highlight at least 8 hours after application. Get it Glowin’ looks beautiful on me at first, but does end up fading a bit because there’s not enough contrast with my fair skin.
I love how these highlighters look on my cheekbones, cupid’s bow, and the bridge of my nose. At this point, I have not figured out how to get these to work anywhere near my eyes. I have used a few shades as a brow bone highlight, lid color, or inner corner highlight with no success. For some reason, the powders don’t end up looking smooth. Maybe I’m using the wrong primer? I just thought it would be cool if these were even more versatile.
I really love these palettes, especially Flash + Awe! MAC brought us intense highlighters that have a smooth, flawless appearance. No powdery look, no stripe effect.
The shades are not revolutionary, but they are highlights that a lot of people would enjoy. Plus, the palette is a nice value! For $39.50, the 3 shades total 0.45 oz (0.15 oz each). For reference, Becca’s Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighters are $38 for only 0.25 oz.
